I know many people who have visited Luxembourg as a day trip from France or Belgium as they are neighboring countries and you can get there quickly by train or car.

It is very popular to visit Luxembourg for a weekend or a long weekend as it is possible to see the main highlights of the country in a short time. I though wanted to get out of Luxembourg City and get to know the country a little better.

What is great about Luxembourg, is that it has a large amount of international workers and most people speak English, even though the official languages of the country are French, German and Luxembourgish. This means as a native English speaker it is super easy to travel within Luxembourg and I had no issues communicating only in English while I was there.

Luxembourg is known for being one of the richest countries in the world due to its financial sector and if you visit or travel through the Kitchberg area of Luxembourg City in the area of Kirchberg you can see many new office buildings, which are the home of headquarters of many international businesses.

Luxembourg was one of the founding members of the European Union and you can find many buildings in Luxembourg City that house EU offices.

I think most people associate Luxembourg as a rich new company and don’t realize that it is an old beautiful European country with a lot of history and historic buildings to visit.

I had decided to visit to learn more about this country and came away in love with this country, it’s castles and the beautiful scenery while driving through it.

Things to do in Luxembourg

Even though Luxembourg is a small there is still a lot to do. Whether you are planning on visiting Luxembourg for one, two or three days you will find plenty to keep you busy.

If you just have one day in Luxembourg then I would recommend spending that day exploring the old town of Luxembourg city. If you plan to spend 2 days or more then I recommend getting out of Luxembourg city to explore the rest of the country.

If you like castles like me, then make sure to visit some of the 100 castles in Luxembourg, if you like hiking then visit the Mullerthal region and if you like a good wine then make sure to visit the area of Moselle.

Visit the Old Town of Luxembourg City

The old town of Luxembourg City, my favorite part of the city is a UNESCO world heritage site, due to it originally being the site of a fortress from 963AD. It is built on an outcrop of rock, with it being completely surrounded by a valley, it is great to walk along the walls and visit that were once used in the defence of the city.

Vianden Castle

Vianden Castle is the most famous and most visited of all the castles in Luxembourg. As you drive into the town of Vianden you can’t miss it perched above the town. It was built between the 11th and 14th century and was restored between 1978 and 1992 to how we can see it today. It is impressive to visit to see how it was used and the views from some of the rooms looking down into the valley are stunning.

The castle sits on a rock overlooking the town of Vianden and certainly looks beautiful from every part of the town. To appreciate the views you can either hike up to the viewpoint above the castle or take the chairlift from across the river, up the mountain to enjoy views of the river and castle.

When is the Best Time to visit Luxembourg

It can be difficult to decide when is the best time to visit Luxembourg and you may prefer a different time of year to me!! It really depends on what you want to see and do while you are there.

If you enjoy Christmas Markets then maybe you would be best visiting in December or if you want the hottest temperatures then Summer will be best for you.

In the articles below you will find the pros and cons for each month and season of the year, by what weather to expect, what there is to do then and how busy you can expect it to be:

Where to stay in Luxembourg

Most people choose to stay in Luxembourg City when they visit, especially if they are just there for a weekend, though I spent 4 nights in Luxembourg City and 2 nights in Bourglinster. It can even be quite hard to decide where to stay in Luxembourg City, though I would recommend either staying in the old town or within walking distance of the old town.

There are many great towns to visit around Luxembourg and if you are planning a Luxembourg road trip then you may want to stay outside of Luxembourg City as parking is expensive.
