Weather in Luxembourg in February
February is generally warmer than January with average daily temperatures of 6°C, though it has been known to get to 10°C or more, though the second half of the month is normally a lot warmer than the first half of the month.
On a night you can expect temperatures to range from 1°C to 5°C, so you will want to make sure that you have warm enough clothes for when you go out on an evening.
At the start of the month, the sun rises just after 8 am and sets at 5.30 pm, but by the end of the mont,h the days are longer with sunrise at 7.20 am and sunset at 6.15 pm.
On average, there are 14 days of rain in February, with around 8 of these days when it is snowing.
Things to do in Luxembourg in February
There are many things to do and places to visit in Luxembourg in February, though, as it can be raining for half of the month, you may want to choose things that are indoors rather than outside.
Visit Vianden Castle
A trip to Luxembourg isn’t complete without visiting the most popular castle, Vianden Castle Luxembourg. It was built between the 11th and 14th centuries and dominates the town of Vianden, perched on an outcrop above the town.
It is just 48km north of Luxembourg City and will take around 50 minutes to drive there, though if you don’t have a car, you can go by public transport, though there is no direct train or bus. You can also take a tour from Luxembourg City, which also includes Beaufort Castle and the Mullerthal Trail.
Enjoy the Museums in Luxembourg City
If the weather isn’t too good or it’s a bit cold for you, then make sure to take the opportunity to enjoy the many museums and learn more about the history of the city. This is just one of the many things to do in Luxembourg City in one day.
The Bock Casemates
The Casemates du Bock are part of the original cellars and tunnels that ran under the castle that sat where the old town of Luxembourg is. These tunnels once spanned 23km under the castle and were originally built in 1745.
Here you will be able to see the openings and positioning of the cannons that would be fired in case of any assault on the castle.
The casemates are open all year round and just closed on 25 December and 1 January, and cost 8 euros for adults.
It is worth a visit, to walk around and get lost amongst the tunnels and to see the views down into the valley, and to learn the history of the castle. Make sure to wrap up warm as it is cold in the tunnels.
Luxembourg City Museum
The Luxembourg City Museum explores the culture and heritage of Luxembourg throughout the years and why Luxembourg City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also one of the most popular museums in Luxembourg City.
It is closed on Mondays and open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm and 8 pm on Thursdays. It costs 5 euros for an adult.
MUDAM (Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art)
If you are a fan of art, then you can’t miss MUDAM and the exhibitions of contemporary art. It is located a short walk from the centre of Luxembourg, but worth visiting to see the grounds and building. It is located behind Fort Thungen in a glass building.
It is closed on Tuesdays and open from Wednesday to Monday from 10 am to 6 pm, with it closing at 9 pm on Wednesdays. It costs 8 Euros for an adult.
Mullerthal Trail
If the weather is dry during your visit and you like the outdoors, then wrap up warm, hire a car and explore part of the Mullerthal Trail. Located 33km from Luxembourg City, it is worth visiting to see the Schéissendëmpel waterfalls, situated close to the village of Mullerthal. It is one of the things to do in Echternach, which is the oldest town in Luxembourg and the start of many hiking trails in the country.
Is Luxembourg nice in February?
February is the month with the lowest number of visitors to Luxembourg. In 2021, there were 35,000 visitors, though in 2019 this number was 68,500. If you want to experience the city without many tourists, then it can be a good month to choose, though you do need to consider that it can be raining half of the month.
If you intend to explore many of the museums in Luxembourg City and to visit a few of the castles in Luxembourg and are not planning on doing much hiking, then February can be a nice month to visit Luxembourg, to experience it without all the other tourists.
Does it snow in Luxembourg in February?
You can expect, on average, around 8 days of snow in February, though as the temperatures are warmer in February, you can expect that the snow will melt quickly and stay on the ground for less time than it would in December, the month with the most snow.
What to wear in Luxembourg in February
If you want to know what to wear in Luxembourg in February, then I would recommend having lots of layers. You will need a nice thick coat, hat, and gloves for when you are outside, but when you are inside, you will need to remove the layers.
If you are visiting towards the end of the month, then it will be warmer and you will probably need fewer layers, but it is best to be prepared as the weather can be very unpredictable.
Where to stay in Luxembourg in February
If you are visiting Luxembourg for a few days in February and wondering where to stay in Luxembourg, then I would recommend staying in Luxembourg City and in the old town, so that you are in close walking distance to all the museums and restaurants.
In Luxembourg, you have the options of Luxembourg Castle Hotels, Luxembourg 5 Star Hotels, and Luxembourg Boutique hotels. There is something for everyone, no matter your budget.
Save for later
