Are you planning on visiting Luxembourg and wanting to know where to stay in Luxembourg? In Luxembourg City there are many different areas to stay but there are also beautiful little villages and towns that you can stay in outside of the capital city.

Luxembourg is the 8th smallest of the European Countries at only 2,586 sq km and is landlocked.  It is surrounded by Belgium, France & Germany.  It is the second richest country in the world per capita and also has a royal family.  The Grand Ducal Family of Luxembourg who live in Berg Castle in Luxembourg.

Luxembourg is a great country to visit for a short weekend or even a long weekend as there is lots to do in this small country.  You can stay in Luxembourg City the capital of Luxembourg or venture out and visit the many castles or do some hiking.

Most people stay in Luxembourg City when visiting Luxembourg, though there are lots of great villages outside of the city that you can stay in too. If you just have a few days in the country and plan on staying in Luxembourg City in Luxembourg or even out in some of the other villages then I hope you find this guide helpful.

The Best Area to stay in Luxembourg City

Most peoples first query is Where to stay in Luxembourg City and that really depends on why you are there.  There are generally two areas that most tourists stay in while in Luxembourg City, either the old town or near the train station.  If you are there on business then you are more likely to be staying in the business district on the outskirts of the city near the airport.  If you are on a very tight budget then there is only one option for hostels in Luxembourg City though there is quite a bit of choice for different budgets and private rooms in hotels in Luxembourg City Centre (Old town).

The Old Town Luxembourg

The Old Town in Luxembourg is a beautiful area to stay, filled with old buildings, many museums, cafes and restaurants, it is the area where most visitors to Luxembourg spend their time.  The best things to do in Luxembourg are all within a 5-20 minute walking distance of this area.  The closer you are to the main square the more expensive it is and the more luxurious hotels you will find and slightly outside of this area you will find cheaper accommodation.

The Alzette Luxembourg City

This area is in the valley surrounding the city centre and a beautiful area with the river running alongside it.  It’s very quiet as there are not too many areas where cars can go, so it is very peaceful.  There are a few areas where there are stairs and lifts up to the old town, so it’s nice and easy to get to the old town and the restaurants on an evening.

The Railway Station – The Gare District

This area is busy and bustling during the day and only a 20 minute walk to the city centre of Luxembourg.  If you are planning a few day trips from Luxembourg City then it’s the ideal place to stay.  There are some old buildings in this area and a few of the embassies and it is popular for shopping.

Kirchberg – Business District

This area is the very modern area of the city, where you will find many business offices and the European Parliament located.  It has been built recently but you will also find many cultural events happening here in the concert halls and many upmarket restaurants are located here.

Luxury Hotels in Luxembourg City

4 Star Hotel Simoncini Luxembourg City

Located in the heart of Luxembourg City old town, the 4 star Hotel Simoncini has modern art pieces throughout this new hotel.  It is just 100 metres from the main square and a few metres from the medieval William square.

The hotel has double/twin rooms available with free wifi, tv and a very good breakfast included. 

It was opened in 2009 and has a very modern look and is decorated using art from the gallery next door. There is no parking at the hotel, but public parking if needed is located about 200 metres away. 

There is a hotel owned restaurant 200 metres from the hotel for any guests wanting lunch or dinner.

Best bits: The location is amazing, right in the centre of the old town.

Best for: People wanting to be located in heart of the old town.

4 Star Hotel Parc Beaux Arts

The Parc Beaux Arts Hotel is located in the heart of the old town, this 4 star boutique hotel is near the Palais Grand-Ducal.  The rooms have an English country style decor with high ceiling and fireplaces.

The hotel has only suites where you can relax in the lounge area with comfy seats, free wifi, tv and the price also includes a good a la carte breakfast.

The hotel has a brasserie restaurant on site which serves lunch and dinner, though there are many restaurants close by and just 20 metres away is the National Museum of History and Art. Parking is available nearby at a price of 35 Euros each day.

Best Bits:  Amazing location in the heart of the old town.

Best for: People wanting to be centrally located in a modern 4 star hotel.

5 Star Hotel Le Place d’Armes

This 5 star Hotel Le Place d’Armes is located in the centre of Luxembourg, just 320 metres from the Notre Dame Cathedral on the main square, place d’armes. It is a beautiful art deco boutique hotel with rooms including marble floored bathrooms and ceilings with beams and fireplaces.  Each room has free wifi, flat screen tv. 

The attention to detail and decoration in the whole hotel is exquisite, the rooms are luxurious and everything you would expect from a 5 star hotel. A very good breakfast can be included in your booking and with only 28 rooms the hotel offers a very personal touch to all its clients. 

Guests can choose from double/twin rooms and suites with seating areas and fireplaces. The hotel has an 3 onsite restaurant’s for lunch and dinner and there are numerous terraces for you to enjoy the sun or a drink. 

In the vaulted cellars you can also find a fitness and wellness centre, where you can enjoy facials and massages.

Best bits: People wanting to be in the centre of Luxembourg in a small boutique hotel with only 28 rooms.

Best for: People wanting to stay in a 5 star hotel in a great location.

Best Hotels in Luxembourg City Centre – Old Town

3 Star Francais Luxembourg Hotel

You could not get a better location than in the heart of Luxembourg old town in the main square, Hotel Francais Luxembourg City is perfectly located for your trip to Luxembourg. 

The hotel has good double glazing so even though it is located on the main square the rooms are not too noisy. The hotel offers guests double or twin rooms with a good continental buffet breakfast included. The hotel has free wifi in the lobby with all rooms having flat screen tv’s, kettle and safety deposit box.

The hotel has an onsite restaurant Cafe Francis that is open from 11am to 11pm for lunch and dinner, though in this location you have many restaurants nearby that you can choose from too.

Best for:  People wanting to be located in the heart of Luxembourg City’s old town.

3 Star – Hotel Parc Plaza

This 3 star Hotel Parc Plaza is located a 10 minute walk from the old town on the edge of the Municipal Park, the Hotel Parc Plaza has amazing views of Luxembourg City centre.  A lot of the rooms have beautiful views out to the park with some also having balconies overlooking the park.

The hotel has double and twin rooms available with free wifi, tv, tea/coffee making facilities.  The rooms are quite basic looking but are spacious and very clean.

Breakfast is not included but a buffet breakfast can be bought at an additional price. The hotel also has an onsite restaurant for lunch and dinner, and outside seating in summer where you have a view of the cathedral and old town.

Parking is available onsite at 25 Euro a day.

There is also a skittle lane onsite for visitors to use!!

Best for: People wanting to stay very close to the centre of the old town with views of the old town.

Best Bits:  Located at the edge of a park and has a skittle lane.

Youth Hostel Luxembourg City Centre

Located 600m from the city centre, about a 10 minute walk.  Youth Hostel Luxembourg City is very modern with free wifi throughout the hostel and with a game room and play area outside for kids.  It also has a cafeteria with a good selection of food at great prices so you can eat your meals in the hostel rather than walking into the centre.

The Youth hostel in Luxembourg City has male only, female only and mixed dorm rooms available.  Each bed has a power outlet and each room has a table and chairs.

This hostel also has free parking in Luxembourg City which some of the hotels do not have!! Bike rental is also available at the hostel.

I personally stayed at this hostel for a few days and found it very clean, great atmosphere and good food.  There are no other hostels in Luxembourg City Centre, but this is still a great hostel to stay at.

The only downside to this hostel, is that it feels very clinical, it can seem very much like a hospital, with the layouts and materials used, it is not a cozy hostel.

Best bits: This Luxembourg City hostel is close to the city centre and breakfast is included.

Best for:  families and solo travellers on a budget

Cheap Hotels in Luxembourg City – Alzette District

La Pipistrelle B&B Hotel

Located on the Grund Luxembourg atthe base of the wall going around the old town, La Pipistrelle Hotel is in a great location.  It is just 50 metres from the river and there is also a lift just around the corner that takes you up to the old town, saving your legs from a big climb.

The hotel is in an old historical building but with a very modern feel, the rooms have been decorated with a very distinguished design, with bathrooms located behind glass with modesty frosting.

The hotel offers double rooms and suites and each rooms has a seating area with a sofa for you to relax and also includes free wifi.

Breakfast is not included but can be added once you are at the hotel.  The hotel also has an onsite restaurant where you can enjoy lunch and dinner if you don’t want to walk the 500 metres to the centre of town.

Best for: Location in the heart of the city.

Best Bits:  Outdoor terrace for relaxing.

Hotel Il Piccolo Mondo Luxembourg City

Located around 2.5 miles from the centre of Luxembourg City and the train station, Il Piccolo Mondo Carlton is a modern hotel offering wifi, flat screen tv’s and private bathrooms in each room.

There is no parking on site, though there is public parking nearby charged at 1 Euro an hour Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm.  A car is really not needed though when you are in Luxembourg City and even though the hotel is a little out of the centre, public transport in Luxembourg is free so it is easy to get to and from the hotel.

The hotel has single, double and triple rooms available and a good breakfast is included.

There is an onsite Italian restaurant offering lunch and dinner for those who do not want to return to the centre of the city in an evening.

Best for:  People on a budget.

Cons: It is a long walk into the centre of Luxembourg City.

Where to stay in Luxembourg, Hotels near Luxembourg Station

3 Star Park Inn by Radisson Luxembourg City

The Park Inn by Radisson is located between the city centre and the train station. It is just 350 metres from the train station and a 5 minute walk to the Notre Dame Cathedral in the city centre.

This is a contemporary hotel with 99 bedrooms and has a fitness centre and a bar and if you want the security of knowing exactly what you get from an international chain then this is a great choice.

Parking and breakfast are available at an additional cost.

Best for: People who like to stay in an international chain, you know what you are getting.

Cons: It does not have the personal touch of some of the smaller hotels.

3 Star Empire Hotel Luxembourg City

This 3 star hotel is one of the hotels near Luxembourg Train Station, Hotel Empire is only a short 20 minute walk from the old town for those wanting to explore Luxembourg city centre.  The hotel is opposite the train station so great if you are looking to explore nearby places by train.

Each room has free wifi, a tv, mini bar and safety deposit box.  A very good continental buffet breakfast is also included within the price.

The hotel offers single and twin/double rooms and a 24 hour reception.  The rooms are quite basic but clean unless you pick the deluxe rooms which have been decorated to a much higher standard.

Best bits: Location opposite the train station and near the old town.

Best for: Single people, couples wanting a well located hotel.

3 Star Hotel Perrin in Luxembourg City Centre

The Hotel Perrin Luxembourg City (Former Carlton Hotel) is located 200 metres from the Luxembourg train station, it is in a great location and a short walk from the old town.

The hotel offers single, double and triple rooms each with wifi, tv, tea/coffee making facilities and a hairdryer in the the private bathroom.

You can choose to book the room with or without a great breakfast and to have a room with or without a balcony and city views.

The hotel is a family run business in art deco style and they have been welcoming guests personally since 1932.

Best for: People looking for a hotel close to the train station and old town.

Best bits: Beautiful art deco hotel and outside areas to enjoy summer days.

Where to stay in Vianden

Vianden is known for it’s stunning castle, perched on the hillside and to me a place you must visit while you are in Luxembourg. 

It is possible to get a bus from Luxembourg City to Vianden which will take around 1 hour and 30 minutes or as I did you can hire a car and drive it in about 45 minutes.

If you plan on staying over then here are some great options:

Youth Hostel Vianden – This is a great cheap option, if you are backpacking through the country and are on a budget.  It is close to the castle, has free parking and wifi.  The only downside is that there are no private rooms, only dorm beds are available.

Hotel Heintz – This hotel is in a beautiful old building in a great location around 500 metres from the castle and the centre of town.  Parking is available on site for a fee of 15 euros per day.

Hotel Belle Vue – Located just outside the town, but only around a 10 minute walk into the centre and 15 minutes to the castle, this hotel has free use of an indoor swimming pool and sauna.  It is a modern hotel with spa facilities, so you can enjoy a massage of other treatment while you are visiting.
