When is the Best Time to Visit Luxembourg?
The best time for visiting Luxembourg, depends on why you are wanting to go there?
If you are wanting to hike and see lots of castles, then maybe you would want to go in Spring or Autumn when it’s not as hot as summer.
Summer though can be a beautiful time to visit, though it might be too hot for some people and it can be very crowded at this time as most of Europe and USA take their holidays in July & August.

Spring In Luxembourg
Spring is a great time to visit Luxembourg as the temperatures are not too hot yet and you can see the leaves starting to grow back on the trees. It is also the time when events start to happen and the cities come alive.

March in Luxembourg
March in Luxembourg is still a cold part of the year with the average temperature around 6°c, you will find that mornings and evenings are very cold, with it being a little more comfortable during the day. March still has around 60% of the month overcast, meaning it can feel cooler than it actually is.
If you visit Luxembourg in March, then most of the month the sun will be setting between 6.15pm and 7pm, though by the end of March the clocks go forward meaning that the sun won’t be setting until around 8pm.
In early March you will find a fire festival in Esch-Sur-Alzette with a bonfire ceremony to mark the end of winter. Around the 10th of March there is a festival in Luxembourg City to welcome Spring and you can enjoy the concerts, street artists and food trucks.
April in Luxembourg
In April we start to see longer days, starting from 13 hours of light at the beginning of the month to 14.5 hours at the end of the month. It’s a great time to see the country before the crowds of tourists start to arrive. The temperature is also starting to increase to an average of 9°c, though it is possible that the temperature can reach 15-20°c this month.
Rainfall can be quite low in April with it sometimes being the driest month of the year. In April the events start and you can attend the Grevenmacher wine market as the new vintage is presented and taste the wines of the year, before everyone else.
May in Luxembourg
May is a great month to visit as the days are long with an average of 15.5 hours of daylight per day, you can explore the cities and countryside until late. In May the average temperature is 13°c, though it can be as pleasant as 20-25°c. May generally starts off dry but towards the end of the month there are more rainy days.
In May you will find more wine tasting events throughout the country and you can even watch or participate in the Luxembourg Marathon.
Summer in Luxembourg
Summer is a great time to visit Luxembourg, with the average temperature during the day of 23°c (73°f) and 13°c (55°f) degrees at night. At this time of year there is an average of 9 days of rain a month and so it is the best time to go weather wise.
It might though make it more difficult for hiking in Luxembourg, sightseeing Luxembourg City and seeing the Luxembourg castles, but luckily when there is rain it is normally for a short period and during the night, so it shouldn’t spoil your trip.
June in Luxembourg
June is a great time to visit Luxembourg as the temperatures are getting higher and you have the longest days of the year, with the days having just over 16 hours of day light, it gives you plenty of time to explore before the sun sets around 9.45pm.
This is when the tourist season starts as many schools in Europe finish just after the middle of the month. You will find that there are lots of festivals and celebrations in Luxembourg. One of the biggest days of the year in Luxembourg is 23rd June when National Day, the official birthday of the Grand Duke is celebrated.
On the evening of the 22nd you will see that there are fireworks set off from the Adolphe Bridge in Luxembourg City and on the 23rd you can enjoy the processions through the streets of Luxembourg City.
It is a great month to visit if you enjoy seeing festivals and local celebrations, though it is the month with the most rainfall, though generally most of this occurs during the evening.
July in Luxembourg
July is a great time to visit Luxembourg, though you will start to notice a lot of tourists as it’s already the school holidays for many European Countries.
The start of July has over 16 hours of daylight and by the end of July there will be just over 15 hours of daylight, so plenty of time for you to be outside and enjoying the country and doing lots of day trips from Luxembourg.
In this month you will find fewer amount of days of rain, though it is still possible, also the average temperature is around 23°c, though temperatures can reach as high as 30°c.
Throughout July you will find many festivals in Luxembourg and not just in the capital Luxembourg City.
August in Luxembourg
Luxembourg in August is very similar to July with average temperatures around the same, and normally the same amount of rainy days.
Expect many tourists in Luxembourg when you visit in August, there are many festivals throughout this month, some more targeted at young people but enough that if you travel to Luxembourg in August you will be able to find a festival you can enjoy.
Autumn in Luxembourg
Autumn can be a great time to visit Luxembourg, the hot summer temperatures are starting to cool down, going from an average of 19°c in September to 7°c in November. Autumn generally has less rainy days, though they do start to appear more in November.
September in Luxembourg
September is a great month to visit Luxembourg, the number of tourists have reduced significantly and the average temperature is 19°c, making it much more enjoyable to hike and explore the countryside around the city.
September in Luxembourg is known as the wine harvesting season and if you love wine then it’s a great time to visit. You will find different Wine festivals in this month where you can enjoy wine tasting and competitions, family friendly games and horse carriage rides throughout the day and concerts and fireworks happening in the evenings.
October in Luxembourg
October you will find is a generally dry month in Luxembourg, though the number of festivals has now reduced significantly, you will find the end of the wine harvest festival that you can attend.
The average temperature in October is down to 13°c, though it can get down to as little as 7°c, you will find though that there is not much rain so as long as you wrap up warm with layers, it should still be a good time to explore and hike in Luxembourg.
November in Luxembourg
In November you will be noticing that the temperature has dropped a lot with the average temperature around 5°c, though it can get up to 8°c and and as low as 3°c. Generally in November you will find an average amount of 8 rainy days, though around 70% of the month will be overcast, with the sun setting at around 4.40pm by the end of the month.
You shouldn’t see snow in November in Luxembourg, though it is possible to see some in the final days of the month.
The start of November is quiet as there are public holidays on the 1st & 2nd of the month and people are getting ready for Christmas. On the 18th November 2022 you will find that the 5 Christmas markets will be open and the celebrations for Christmas begin, with the opening of the winter lights festival in the Place d’Armes, where the square will be transformed into a winter wonderland, with concerts, stalls and performances.
Winter in Luxembourg
Winter in Luxembourg can be a difficult time, December has the shortest days of the year and normally in December and January you will find that there is the most amount of rain and snow in the country. The average temperatures in these months are around 4c, dropping below zero on an evening.
Expect snow from the end of November until the middle of February.
December in Luxembourg
The shortest day of the year is in December where you will experience just over 8 hours of daylight, which is half of the day light you would experience in June. The average temperature is around 4°c degrees during the day and normally it is below zero at night. This is the time of the year when Luxembourg has the most amount of rain and snow.
It is a great time of year to visit if you enjoy visiting Christmas Markets, and in 2022 there will be 5 Christmas markets all open from 18th November to 1 January 2023. You will find them located in Place d’Armes, Place Guillaume II, Place de la Constitution, Rue de Strasbourg and Grande Rue at Roude Petz.
Here you will find ice skating, fairs, craft and food stalls and many Christmas lights illuminating the streets.
January in Luxembourg
January is the quietest month of the year for visiting Luxembourg. The Christmas markets are over, it is cold and the days are still short and after the Christmas and New Years celebrations, it’s the month when the least amount of people travel, unless they are planning on going to a ski resort and there are no ski resorts in Luxembourg.
There is not much happening in Luxembourg at this time of year, but it can be a good time to visit Luxembourg City for a short break and enjoy having the city and museums to yourself.
February in Luxembourg
In February people are starting to come out a bit more with the start of carnival, though the temperatures are still very low and below zero on an evening. The start of carnival is 2nd February on Candlemas Day and ends on Ash Wednesday with the burning of a straw man, to disperse the evil spirits of winter and to celebrate the arrival of Spring.
The traditions of Carnival in Luxembourg date back to 1870 when the carnival feast was the last time people ate well after winter, as there was normally a shortage of food until food grew in Spring. The Diekirch parade is the biggest in Luxembourg with other 50 floats and great fun to watch.
