When does summer start in Luxembourg?
Summer in Luxembourg is generally June, July and August with the most amount of visitors in these months. Though officially it starts June 20th at the start of the summer solstice and ends on September 22nd.
June 20th is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, but we normally see temperatures starting to increase before this date and last until the end of August and if we are lucky until mid September.
Luxembourg Summer Weather
Summer has the best weather in Luxembourg and I loved visiting in summer. You will find though that June is the second wettest month of the year, but July and August have about half the amount of rainy days as in June.
The Luxembourg temperature in summer that you can expect is around 70°f (21°c) in June, 73°F (23°C) in July and 73°F (23°C) in August. Though it is quite normal for it to get up to and above 86°F (30°C) during the day in July and August.
June has the longest days of the year, meaning that you can get out and explore the until later in the evening, especially if you want to hike or maybe just enjoy a river view while you eat dinner.
Do many people visit during summer in Luxembourg?
Summer is the busiest time of year in Luxembourg, with the school holidays in Europe running from the end of June to the end of August. While only 1.2 million people visit Luxembourg all year, most of this number is during summer.
Most of the visitors to Luxembourg come from neighbouring countries, France, Belgium and Germany and visit during the summer months. It can be busier during summer but compared to other European countries and cities, it less crowded in summer.
Things to do in Luxembourg in Summer
Luxembourg is a small country but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t plenty to do there, especially in summer. In summer you can explore the countryside and do some hikes, visit vineyards, visit many castles and learn more about the country.
Hike the Mullerthal Trail
The Mullterthal Trail starts in Echternach, though it is basically 3 circular routes, so it is possible to start in a different location. Here you will get to explore the countryside of the area, see some small waterfalls, hike through wooded area and get to see part of the country with very few other people.
This is a great option if you want to get out of Luxembourg City and see a bit of nature. It is possible to hike just part of the trail, as the full trail is 112km, then get a bus back to Echternach, like I did. Luxembourg’s public transport is free too, so you don’t need to worry about having money or buying a ticket for the bus.
Wine Tasting in the Moselle Region
The Moselle region of Luxembourg is a beautiful area, where you will find many wineries, than you can visit do a tour and sample their wines. Quiet a few of the wineries have views down the valley, where you can see the river that cuts through the area, and beyond the river Germany.
This is a great area for beautiful views and a if you love wine, then perfect to sample while having lunch or dinner, while enjoying the views.
Vianden Castle

Vianden Castle is the most visited place outside of Luxembourg City and a place that most tourists want to visit, despite their being many castles in Luxembourg. It has been restored and so is no longer a ruin and you can see examples of how the rooms would have looked a few hundred years ago.
While visiting Vianden Castle you must also visit the town of Vianden. It is a beautiful old town, located alongside the river and certainly worth a walk around the old streets. Also make sure to take the chairlift up the mountain to a viewpoint higher up than the castle.
Luxembourg City
Luxembourg City is a great place to explore in summer. Not only can you visit the old town as you walk around the Chemin de Corniche, the wall that goes around the old town, but it is nice to explore the The Grund, the valley that you can see from the top of the wall. The river goes around the old town, with a pathway running alongside to walk.
Also make sure to visit some of the museums if the weather is not good and take a walk across the valley to Fort Thungen and the park surrounding it, which has great views of the city.
What to wear in the summer months in Luxembourg
As it is warm in summer, you will want to wear either shorts and tshirts or loose fitting skirts or dresses. Make sure to have comfy shoes with you as you will do more walking than you expect to.
Also make sure to have a sunhat with you and a light rainproof jacket in case you get caught out by rain.
On an evening for dinner, you might want something a little more dressy than shorts and tshirts but you don’t need anything too smart.
Where to stay during summer in Luxembourg
If you are planning on visiting Luxembourg City, then I would recommend staying in the old town or within walking distance of the old town, as that is the area that you will be mostly exploring and there are a lot of bars and restaurants in that area too. Try not to stay close to the railway station as that area is not safe on an evening.
If you are planning on exploring the country, then you could stay in one of the two castle hotels that there are in Luxembourg or you may want to stay in the oldest town in Luxembourg Echternach. Vianden is also another old town popular with tourists that you may want to stay and enjoy.
Save for later
