When does Autumn start in Luxembourg?
Autumn in Luxembourg is typically during the months of September, October, and November, with the season officially starting around September 22nd, following the autumn equinox. This is when the days begin to be shorter than the nights and the temperatures start to cool, bringing a crisp freshness to the air.
Although the start of September still enjoys some lingering warmth from summer, the true autumnal weather usually sets in by mid-September, painting Luxembourg’s landscapes in vibrant shades of orange and gold.
Luxembourg Autumn Weather
Autumn in Luxembourg brings cooler temperatures and a vibrant display of fall colors, especially when you venture out into the countryside, making it a wonderful time to visit. September still offers mild weather, with temperatures around 64°F (18°C), gradually dropping to 55°F (13°C) in October and 46°F (8°C) in November. Though it’s cooler than Luxembourg in summer, early autumn remains pleasant for outdoor activities like hiking or strolling through the countryside to admire the changing leaves.
Rainfall in autumn is moderate, with fewer rainy days compared to June, though November starts to see a slight increase. The shorter days and cooler evenings provide a cozy atmosphere, perfect for enjoying warm meals in the many restaurants or exploring charming cafes. With fewer tourists than in summer, autumn allows for a more relaxed and peaceful experience of Luxembourg’s beauty.
Do many people visit Luxembourg in Autumn?
Autumn in Luxembourg offers a quieter and more relaxed experience compared to the bustling summer months. While summer sees the majority of Luxembourg’s 1.2 million annual visitors, particularly from neighboring France, Belgium, and Germany, autumn draws fewer crowds, making it an ideal time to explore at a more leisurely pace.
With the school holidays ending in late August, everywhere is much less crowded, including the old town and all the museums. Autumn provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy Luxembourg’s natural beauty, historical sites, and charming towns without the summer rush and with normally good weather still.
Things to do in Luxembourg in Autumn
Luxembourg may be small, but there’s still plenty to enjoy during autumn. The cooler weather and vibrant fall foliage make it a perfect time to explore the countryside on scenic hikes.
You can also visit Luxembourg’s vineyards during harvest season, with many wine festivals happening in September.
Make sure to visit its many castles, and delve into the rich history of the country by visiting a few of the many museums. Autumn offers a quieter atmosphere, ideal for exploring Luxembourg at a quieter pace than in summer.
Attend a Wine Festival
Luxembourg in September comes alive with wine festivals to celebrate the harvest season. These events offer wine tastings and competitions, along with family-friendly activities like games and horse carriage rides during the day. As evening falls, the festivities continue with lively concerts and dazzling fireworks, creating a fun and vibrant atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.
These are a great experience and if you are visiting Luxembourg during this time, they are definitely something you should attend.
Hiking close to Echternach
Echternach is the oldest town in Luxembourg and dates back to 698 AD. It is located right on the border with Germany. If you cross the river in town, you’ll find yourself in the German town of Echternacherbrück.
Autumn is a particularly beautiful time to explore this charming town, as the surrounding landscapes come alive with fall colors. Echternach also serves as a starting point for the Müllerthal Trail, a 112 km path that winds through Luxembourg’s “Little Switzerland.” You can hike sections of the trail, enjoying the autumn air and with fewer crowds. After a day on the trail, it’s possible to catch a bus from one of the nearby villages back to Echternach.
Visit Castles
Exploring Luxembourg’s stunning castles is a must, offering a look into the country’s rich history. Vianden Castle, one of the most famous, sits majestically on a hilltop overlooking the town of Vianden, with its impressive towers and restored interior. History enthusiasts will enjoy touring the castle or listening to the audio guide to learn more about its past.
Another popular castle is Bourscheid Castle, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Sûre River Valley, highlighting its strategic military significance during the Middle Ages. Open year-round, it’s another must-visit, and an audio guide is highly recommended to learn more about its history. Luxembourg’s castles are worth visiting, even in Luxembourg in November, on a cloudy day.
Christmas Markets
If you’re a fan of Christmas markets, don’t miss visiting Luxembourg City after November 22nd, when the city transforms into a festive wonderland. Several markets pop up across the city, offering holiday treats, artisanal crafts, and seasonal decorations, these go on through Luxembourg in Winter until the beginning of January.
Beyond the markets, Luxembourg hosts special exhibitions, festive concerts, and other events that fill the city with holiday cheer. Stroll through beautifully lit streets, savor mulled wine, and try local delicacies while immersing yourself in the joyful atmosphere. Luxembourg City in late November is the perfect place to kick off the holiday season in a magical setting.
What to wear in Autumn in Luxembourg
In autumn, it is important to have layers with the changing temperatures in Luxembourg. In early autumn during the day, it can still be possible to wear t-shirts but you will want with you a light sweater, or a comfortable jacket, paired with jeans or comfortable trousers. Comfy shoes are still a must, as exploring Luxembourg’s streets and countryside can involve more walking than you may expect.
Bring a warm scarf or hat for cooler evenings or late autumn, and a rainproof jacket, as late autumn showers are common. For dinner, you might want to opt for something a bit more stylish, like a nice sweater or casual dress, but nothing too formal, just comfortable and stylish enough to enjoy an evening out.
Where to stay during Fall in Luxembourg
If you’re visiting Luxembourg City in autumn, I recommend staying in or near the Old Town, as it’s the area you’ll likely spend most of your time exploring. The Old Town is home to many bars and restaurants, making it convenient for evenings out. It’s best to avoid staying near the railway station, as that area can be less safe, especially in the evening.
For those planning to explore beyond Luxembourg City, autumn is a perfect time to stay in one of Luxembourg’s two castle hotels, offering a scenic and peaceful retreat. You might also consider staying in Echternach, the country’s oldest town, or Vianden, another charming historic town popular with visitors. Both provide a picturesque autumn backdrop and easy access to hiking trails and countryside views so that you can experience the change of colors of leaves on the trees.
Save for later
