Weather in Zion National Park in May
May in Zion National Park brings warmer weather as spring transitions to early summer, with averagectemperatures around 70°f (21°c). Daytime highs typically range from 70°f-83°f (21°c-28°c), creating perfect conditions for hiking and other outdoor activities. However, mornings and nights can still be cool, with temperatures occasionally dipping to around 43°f (6°c).
May also provides longer days to explore, with sunrise at 6.35 a.m. at the start of the month and moving to 6:15 a.m. by the end. Sunset extends from 8:20 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. by the end of the month, giving you plenty of daylight to enjoy the park.
Rain is less frequent in May, with only 5 days of rain on average. It is possible that the Narrows is closed due to increased water flow and higher water levels due to the snow run off further up stream.
Is Zion busy in May?
In 2024 May was the second busiest month of the year with 589,000 visitors to the park!! Only June was busier!! In previous years it has been second or third busiest, with it having a similar number of visitors to July.
If you are planning on visiting in May, then make sure to get your accommodation booked well in advance, especially if you are wanting to stay in the park or close by in Springdale.
Is the Zion Shuttle Operating in May?
In May, the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive remains closed to private vehicles, except for guests staying at Zion Lodge, so you will need to take the shuttle or rent a bike to visit Zion Canyon.
From the beginning of May till around the 18th May, the first shuttle will leave the visitor center at 7am, with the last bus into the canyon at 5pm and the last bus from the Temple of Sinawava at 7.15pm.
From around the 19th May 2025, the first bus will leave the visitors center at 6am, with the final bus into the park at 7pm and the last bus from the Temple of Sinawava at 8.15pm. Remember though that if the last bus is full, you may have to walk the 9 miles back to the visitors center!!
Camping in Zion in May
In May, the only campground open at the East Entrance to Zion National Park is the Watchman Campground, which is conveniently located next to the visitor center. This campground is reservation-only, so be sure to book in advance, with reservations available up to 6 months ahead.
Currently the South Campground which is located near to the visitors center is currently closed for rehabilitation work, to stop flooding in the campground during heavy rain storms.
Lava Point Campground is usually open from May, though the opening date does depend on when the road is cleared of snow. Here there are only 6 primitive campsites, with pit toilets and trash cans but there is no running water on site and no water source close by.
Hiking Zion in May
As May is one of the busiest months in the park, it can be quite busy while hiking in Zion National Park. Most trails will be open, though The Narrows, can still be affected by rain and high water levels meaning that this hike can be closed.
Angels Landing is one of the most popular hikes to do in May as the conditions generally in May are good. The Upper Emerald pool are a beautiful hike to do in May and also the Canyon Overlook Trail.
If the river is too high to hike the Narrows then it is certainly worth hiking the Riverside Walk to get to the start of the Narrows.
Things to do in Zion National Park in May
In May, Zion National Park offers plenty of activities, with nearly all centered around the park’s breathtaking outdoor scenery. Hiking is the top attraction, with trails for all skill levels, from easy walks to more challenging adventures.
For shorter hikes, options like the Riverside Walk, Lower Emerald Pools, and other accessible trails provide stunning views without long hours on the trail. (Note: Weeping Rock is currently closed, due to a rockslide with no estimate of when it will reopen). Springtime in Zion also brings blooming wildflowers and vibrant greenery, making these hikes especially rewarding.
In addition to hiking, you can enjoy a scenic drive along the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway, which offers spectacular overlooks and photo opportunities from the comfort of your vehicle. Make sure to stop and do the Zion Canyon Overlook Trail to get stunning views down into the canyon.
You can also visit the Zion visitor center for outdoor exhibits and to speak with a ranger for tips on exploring the park. The Zion Human History Museum is open and the place where you can watch a 22-minute film about the park’s landscapes and history, a great way to learn more about Zion.
Can you hike The Narrows in May?
Yes, you can hike the Narrows in May, but be prepared for cold water temperatures, typically ranging from 50°F to 55°F (10°C to 13°C), though conditions can vary. If you’re planning to hike it in May, then you shouldn’t need a drysuit unless it is a particularly cold day.
You can rent the equipment needed in Springdale, which in May is recommended, Canyoneering Boots, neoprene socks and a hiking stick.
May can still bring increased rainfall, and river levels may be high due to spring runoff. The Narrows may be closed on certain days due to high water levels and fast currents, which can be dangerous. Always check current conditions and safety advisories at the visitor center before heading out.
Can you hike Angels Landing in May
You can hike Angels Landing in May, though it can be quite cool early morning or late evening. Make sure to have some warm layers. If you plan to hike beyond Scout’s Landing, you’ll need to apply for an Angels Landing Permit, which is required year-round. There is an online lottery released a few months before or you can apply the day before.
