Luxembourg Weather in October
Luxembourg can be pleasant to visit during October, as the temperatures are still ok for Europe with average temperatures of between 46°F (8°C) and 55°F (13°C), though it has fallen as low as 27°F (-3°C), but also recorded a high temperature of 79°F (26°C) in previous years.
The negative about October and something that I don’t like (but maybe you love), is that on average there are 16 days of rain and it’s one of the wettest months of the year.
If you are visiting in October, then make sure to come prepared with waterproofs and an umbrella as even exploring the old town you could get wet. You may be lucky and experience some of the fifteen days without rain, but it is best to be prepared, just in case.
It may not be the best month weather wise to experience Luxembourg, but if you are looking for a half term break or a long weekend, it could still be a good option.
Do many people visit Luxembourg in October?
In 2023 over 1.4 million people visited Luxembourg, though you will find the majority of these, visited over the summer months. Luxembourg used to have a lot of people visiting for business but since 2020 the number has reduced by nearly 15%.
If you prefer to visit when there are fewer tourists then October could be a good month, and if you visit during the week there will be even fewer visitors as most people tend to come for a long weekend.
Things to do in October in Luxembourg
If you are thinking of visiting Luxembourg in October, then there are still plenty of things to do. If the weather is wet, then in Luxembourg City there are many museums that you can visit. If you want to leave the city and explore the countryside then you will find many castles and museums to visit too. If you do have good weather, then you may want to do some hiking in the Mullerthal region or go attend one of the festivals happening this month.
Vianden Castle
You can’t visit Luxembourg without taking a trip to Vianden Castle. It’s a spectacular castle which dominates the town, it sits above the town and is visible throughout the town. You can choose to walk to the castle from the town, just a 10 minute walk or take the chair lift up to a viewing point above the castle and walk back down.
You will certainly want to spend a day visiting this castle and the quaint town below it.
Bock Casemates
Visit the Bock Casemates in Luxembourg City. You can explore some of the tunnels that ran below the original castle on the site of the old town of Luxembourg City. The tunnels used to cover a distance of 23km and now you explore part of them.
You will see the holes where the cannons were placed, ready to defend the city and in WW2, were used as bomb shelters. It is something you won’t want to miss while you are visiting the old town of Luxembourg City.
Night of Museums
In Luxembourg City on the 12th October 2024, you can experience the Night of Museums, here the museums in the city open their doors to the public from 5pm to 1am and you can get to see the exhibitions as well as a night of dance, music and live acts. This is something very unique and if you are in Luxembourg City during this time, you should make the effort to attend.
Visit the Nutmarket in Viaden
Vianden may be famous for Vianden Castle, but on the second Sunday of October, every year, the town welcomes visitors to the nutmarket. The town is filled with visitors that day to see all the nuts on sale as well as DJ’s, bands and orchestras performing to keep everyone entertained.
Celebrate the end of the grape harvest in Schengen
Not only is Schengen known for the signing of the Schengen Agreement, but in late October you can also attend the festival that marks the end of the grape harvest for the year. Here you can taste wines, visit the 100 stalls of the flea and craft market, see international street artists and listen to some great music.
Where to stay in Luxembourg during October
In October in Luxembourg, you should not have a problem finding accommodation, even if you book a last minute trip, though if you book in advance you will have more choice.
Hotels in Luxembourg are not cheap and you can expect to pay anywhere from 200 Euro to 500 Euros a night. For solo travelers, there is a Youth Hostel, if you are happy to share a dorm room with others which is from 35 Euros a night.
If you are planning to stay in Luxembourg City, then you will want to stay in either the old town or the grund, this way you will have easy access to all the tourist attractions and lots of bars and restaurants. I would avoid being close to the railway station as at night it can be a little dangerous due to it being the red light district of the city.
If you are planning to spend a few days outside of the city to explore the rest of the country, then Ecternach is a great area for hiking, Vianden has a beautiful castle and it is also possible to stay in one of the two castle hotels in Luxembourg.
