3 Day Road Trip of Luxembourg

If you are planning a trip to Luxembourg then I definitely recommend that you hire a car for a few days to see things outside of Luxembourg city and do a road trip of of luxury in a castle.Luxembourg.

I would recommend either spending a full day exploring Luxembourg City either as your first full day or your last full day. As the airport is only 8km from the City Centre and only 20 minutes by bus, I would not recommend renting a car for the time you will be spending in Luxembourg City, as parking in the city centre is expensive and a car is not needed during this time.

It is possible to do this road trip with public transport, but you might not be able to fit as many things into your day, as even though Luxembourg does have a lot of train lines and bus services, you will probably find that you will need to use both a bus and a train to get to your destination and the buses are not too frequent.

Day 1 of your road trip from Luxembourg City: – Vianden & Bourscheid

I would recommend picking up your car early and first driving to Vianden to explore the town and the castle, it is the most popular of the castles in Luxembourg. It takes about 45 minutes from the airport to the town of Vianden.

There are many pay and display car parks in the town or you can park on the road going out of the town for free and walk in.

You will need around 2 hours to visit the castle and you can also walk up to the top of the hill behind the castle to get some pictures and amazing views of the valley and the town. Then you can take the chairlift back down to the other side of the river and see the amazing views if you don’t want to walk back down.

I would recommend having lunch in the town and spending a little time walking around it, as it is a beautiful old town that was established in the 4th century.

After lunch drive 30 minutes to Bourscheid Castle and explore the castle and enjoy the views of the valley below, you will need about 90 minutes to explore and see the castle. Make sure to get the audio guide to learn the history of the castle.

After visiting Bourscheid, it is back in the car to visit Esch-sur-sure, about a 20 minute drive away. There are a few car parks located alongside the river, I parked in one of these and then I recommend walking around the town until you find a road that goes up towards the centre of the hill in the middle. Keep walking upwards and you will eventually find yourself at the entrance to the ruins of a castle that stands on top of the hill overlooking the town.

When you are up there admiring the views, you will notice a hill opposite with paths and benches. Go back down, cross the river (there is only one road that crosses it) and then take the first right, at the end of the road, you will find a footpath, that will take you up to a viewpoint of Esch-Sur-Sure.

If you have ever wanted to stay in a castle, then I recommend driving north 40 minutes to Chateau d’urspelt for a night of luxury in a castle.

Day 2 of your Luxembourg Road Trip – Beaufort Castle, Larochette Castle & Moselle

If you decided last night to spend time in the Chateaux d’urspelt then it is a 45 minutes drive down to Beaufort Castle which opens at 9am. Here there are two castles that you can explore, the medieval castle which is open daily all year and the renaissance castle which is open from 2 April to 14 November, Thursday to Sunday and has tours at 11am and 4pm, which you need to phone and book in advance.

Once you have seen Beaufort Castle it is back in the car for a short 15 minute drive to Larochette to visit the castle there. There is parking at the entrance to the castle and this castle is located on an outcrop overlooking the town.

Here you can explore the ruins and the one restored building to see how the castle would have looked, you will need around 1 hour to explore the castle.

From Larochette it is then a 30 minute drive to Grevenmacher to drive south through the Moselle Valley, make sure to stop and have a late lunch in one of the wineries or beautiful restaurants overlooking the river.

It is only a 30 minute drive from Grevenmacher to Schengen but I would make sure to get out of the car, visit a winery or even take a walk along the river to enjoy this beautiful area.

The day is then complete once you arrive at Schengen, the place where it was decided in 1995 to create the Schengen area, free travel without borders between 26 countries within the European Union.

Now you can either decide to stay in Schengen or the Moselle Valley for the night or drive an hour back up through the Moselle Valley to Echternach ready for your last day of exploring.

Day 3 of your drive through Luxembourg – Echternach and Mullerthal Trail

For your last day I would recommend exploring Echternach, it is the oldest town in Luxembourg and dates back to 698AD, though there have been buildings here since the roman times.

Here you can walk around the main square, visit the Basilica and see the Roman villa that dates back to the 3rd century. If you want to get out into the countryside and enjoy a hike then the Mullerthal trail can be started here.

The Mullerthal trail consists of 3 circular routes close to Echternach and covers walks through woods, seeing castles and much more. You can either drive to certain spots and walk parts of one of the loops which are around 35km each or you can start in Echternach or get the bus to a particular area and walk back.

After your day exploring it is back in the car for the 45 minute drive to the airport to drop off the car.
