Echternach is the oldest town in Luxembourg and was established in 698AD when a Monk from Ripon in the UK built an Abbey there, on what was originally an estate with a Roman Villa.

Since then the town has flourished to what it is today and the current Echternach catherdral was built in 1868, though much work has needed to be done in 1953 after part of it was destroyed by bombs during the second world war.

Nowadays it is nice to walk around the old town and admire the beautiful buildings or take a walk along the river and enjoy a hot drink in one of the many cafes and restaurants in the town.

Moselle Valley

The Moselle Valley is the region in Luxembourg known for its wineries and restaurants located alongside the riverside. Some of the wineries are open all year round and it is possible to enjoy a wine tour and sample the wine in January.

Once you have explored the wineries then make sure to stop at one of the restaurants along the river to enjoy the views.

What to wear in Luxembourg in January

As January is the coldest month in the year, make sure that you bring plenty of warm clothes on your trip. You will need to have a thick waterproof coat or many layers and a waterproof jacket.
