The Best Kindle for Travel 2025

Are you planning on going travel and are wanting to know the best kindle for travel to add to your travel gear and which one you should buy for your trip. There are many things that we may need to consider when buying a Kindle, such as the Kindle Size, the weight of the Kindle, is it waterproof and how long the battery will last and I will be discussing these further down in this article.

I always said that I never wanted a Kindle or Ereader but when it was given to me as a leaving present from work, I soon discovered that it was the perfect present.

Books can be heavy to carry around and they take up a lot of space but Kindles can hold hundreds of books and take up very little space in your bag.

Advantages of using a Kindle while traveling

It can really be of benefit having a Kindle while traveling as it means that you are not having to carry heavy books around with you, it can also be difficult to find a paperback book you want to read in a hostel or in a cafe with a book swap (all the good ones seem to have always been taken, or maybe people don’t leave them!!).

With Kindles and different ebook readers, it is possible to buy monthly subscriptions which can help save money overall and there is normally some good deals on books. I personally buy the books at $0 and then at Birthdays and Christmas treat myself to the books by my favorite authors, also I check when there are Amazon deals if the books I want are on offer, so I can buy when they aren’t full price.

Below you will find a Kindle comparison between the different Kindles that you can travel with.

You can buy all the Kindle Books you want

If you are using a Kindle while travelling, then you are not going to have the issue of not being able to find books in English as you can download all the books you want.

A big problem when travelling to countries where English isn’t their first language is that it can be difficult to find books written in English, most bookstores only sell books in their native language and not in English. Some hostels do have book swaps but then maybe the books are not the type of books you like to read or aren’t interesting to you.

Paperback books can also take up a lot of space in your backpack and nowadays many of us solo female travelers are choosing to travel light, with only hand luggage rather than a day bag and a big backpack. This limits even more how much space we are willing to dedicate to books for our trip.

I personally love my Kindle as I can buy books when I want and I have space for hundreds of books on my Kindle without using up more space in my bag.

It can be cheaper to buy Kindle Books

If you are constantly on the road and flying between countries, the only place you may have the opportunity to buy books, is in the airport and those books are not cheap. Also what do you do once you have finished your book, normally you have to give it away so that you can buy your next book.

With the Amazon Kindle you can keep all of your books and even read it again in the future, especially if you buy guides about places you are traveling to, then you may even want to reference on your days out and if it is on your Kindle then you can easily access it. Gone are the days when you need to carry around a huge lonely planet book, nowadays you can just download them, direct to your Kindle and access it whenever you need to refer to it.

If you read a lot then you can choose to buy Kindle Unlimited, a monthly subscription where you can choose from millions of books, thousands of audio books and selected magazines. Make sure to check that your favorite author is included in Kindle Unlimited before buying as I have found that some of my favorite authors are not included within Kindle Unlimited and I would need to buy their books separately. I have found though that a lot of the books I want to read are included within the Audio Books Membership, so if you like listening to books it might be worth looking into that.

If you have Amazon prime, then you will find the choice of hundreds of books included within your subscription, though you may not find the books from your favorite authors there.

Which Kindle is best for a Traveler on a Budget?

N/A

If you are on a budget then I would recommend that you get the original Kindle, this is the smallest kindle and lightest kindle, so it is good for some traveling, as it will fit in your backpack without taking up much space or weight.

The battery will last about 6 weeks if you are reading for around an hour a day, obviously if you read more than this you will need to charge it more frequently. The screen also lights up, so if you are a solo female traveler then it is perfect for staying in dorm rooms, when you want to read at night but you have no privacy curtain or individual light.

The downsides to this Kindle for a solo traveler is that this Kindle is not waterproof, so it is not a good idea to have it near a pool, though i personally have used mine near the pool and just make sure I do not store it on the floor and it is wrapped in a towel. If this concerns you, you could always buy a waterproof bag to store it in when you are not reading.

Which Kindle is Best for being by the pool and on the beach?

N/A

If you are planning on spending a lot of time by the pool and on the beach and are worried about your Kindle getting wet, then it would be best for you to invest in the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite. It supposedly can last up to 60 minutes in fresh water less that 2 metres deep, but there is no way I am testing that!!!

This means that having it with you at the beach or by the pool, you can have the piece of mind that it is not going to get damaged. It also has a light at night so that you can read if you are staying in a dorm room or if you are staying on a remote island for a few days without electricity and want to read at night.

This Kindle does have the better rating over the standard basic Kindle and a lot of people do prefer it as it is slightly bigger and it is waterproof. If you are not on a budget and can spend a little more then this is a great option.

Considering a Kindle vs Tablet for Travel?

N/A

Are you trying to decide whether you want a Kindle or tablet for while you are traveling? The first thing that you need to think about is what are you wanting to use it for more? Do you want something to browse the internet or to read? Kindles are designed and made for reading, rather than browsing the internet. Though there is the option of the Kindle Fire, which is more like a tablet than a Kindle. You can use it as a Kindle and for reading, but you can also browse the internet.

The latest Amazon Fire is much faster that the ones before it, but it does only have a battery life of around 13 hours. It is the heaviest of all the Kindles, but it is also one of the largest with a 10.1″ inch screen.

The Kindle Fire is perfect is you are wanting something more than just an ereader and are wanting to use it to browse the internet. If you are looking for just an ereader then you would be better choosing one of the other Kindle’s.
