Things to consider when buying a Travel Hair Dryer

The most important thing to consider when buying a travel hair dryer is where are you going to be using it, is it for travel within your own country or for travelling when abroad.  If you are planning on travelling abroad, then you will need to make sure that the hair dryer is dual voltage otherwise it will not work outside your own country.  The dual voltage hair dryers have a switch so that you can switch between voltages.

Another thing to consider is the size and weight, if you are flying with them then you will probably want something that is more lightweight, though that can come at the expense of having a smaller motor, which then will make drying your hair a longer process.

Also foldable hair dryers are great at saving space, much better than non foldable hair dryers.

The last thing you want to consider is the power of the motor, generally the more power you have then the quicker it will be to dry your hair.  The dual voltage hair dryers sometimes though sacrifice the highest speed/heat when set to 220 voltage.

Frequently asked Questions

What is the difference between a diffuser and a hair dryer?

A diffuser is an attachment that you add on to your hair dryer. When you dry your hair with a hair dryer it can damage your hair but using a diffuser spreads the heat out causing less damage to be done, it can also help with drying curly hair quicker.

Will a diffuser fit on any hair dryer?

Many of the hair dryers above do not come with diffusers but most diffusers are universal, so if you have one lying around at home then try it on the travel hair dryer you have.

How do I know if my hair dryer is dual voltage?

Normally in the instructions of a hair dryer it will tell you if the hair dryer is dual voltage.  If you don’t have the instructions then another way is to look at the hair dryer to see if you can find a small button/dial or switch saying 110 – 220 volts then this will show you that the hair dryer is dual voltage.

If you cannot find something like this then assume that it is not dual voltage.   You can also google the model of the hair dryer to find the manufacturers information about that model.

What can I use instead of a diffuser?

If your hair dryer does not come with a diffuser or you lose your diffuser on your travels then you can try a DIY method of diffusing your hair.

  1. Use a sock to cover the end of the hair dryer leaving about 2 or 3 inches at the end and use this to dry your hair.  If your sock is very thick then this method might not work.
  2. Wrap your hair in a microfiber towel or a t-shirt and then dry your hair around the material, without the hair dryer touching your hair.

The second way probably works better than using a sock, but I would probably only use either in an emergency rather than using it as a reliable way to dry my hair.
