Luxembourg City

You can’t make a trip to Luxembourg without visiting Luxembourg City, it is the capital of the country and home to 132,000 people from over 170 countries!! You will love visiting this city as there is so much to see and do while you are visiting.

Make sure to walk around the Chemin de Corniche, the wall that stands around the old town that went around the old castle that once stood there. You can also visit the Bock de Casemates, something I enjoyed seeing, they are in the old tunnels of the castle that once ran for 17km, though now only a small part is open when you can see the openings in the walls for the cannons to defend the city from invasion.

Luxembourg City also has many different museums showing the history of Luxembourg and the world, that you may want to visit during your visit. The area around the old town is also very green and it is nice to spend time walking in the valley along the river or spending time in the parks, especially if you plan on visiting the Museum of Modern Art.

Echternach

Echternach is located just 35km north east of Luxembourg City, and is the oldest city in Luxembourg, dating back to 698AD. It is a small city with a population of just less than 6,000 people and is located along the border with Germany. If you cross the river to the other side, you will be in Germany!!!

You may want to visit Echternach and its surrounding area as it is a popular area for hiking with the Gorges du Loop, waterfalls and the Mullterthal Trail. The villages and towns around are very small and with little options for accommodation, so Echternach is a great base.

The old town center is a beautiful area to explore, with many bars and restaurants with outside seating areas in summer. You should make to visit the abbey, basilica, city hall, place de marche. Just a 20 minute walk outside of the town you will find Echternach Lake and the ruins of a roman villa which are worth a visit as you walk the 5km around the lake.

Vianden

Vianden is more of a town than a city and is located north east of Luxembourg City, just a kilometer from the border with Germany. It is famous because of the castle that stands overlooking the town and the reason that many visitors go to Vianden. If you have time and are not still passing through then it is definitely worth spending some time there.

The main street of the old town has hotels and restaurants dating back hundreds of years, you can also visit the castle perched above the town and if you are visiting in summer, then take the chair lift up the mountain behind the castle for an amazing view of the whole area.

If you enjoy hiking then make sure to hike the Ourdall Promenade, a 8.5km hike one way from Vianden to Stolzembourg, where it ends by the copper mine museum.

Esch-sur-Alzette

Esch-sur-Alzette is the second biggest city in Luxembourg with a population of just under 37,000. It is located south of Luxembourg City and close to the border of France. 200 years ago it was a small farming village but nowadays you can see many modern buildings as it expands.

It is a university town, but also is a hub of industry, science and culture and you can find many bars and restaurants. There are many concert halls to visit, so make sure to check out what is on before your trip.

There is no old town in Esch-sur-Alzette, but if you want to see a concert, do some shopping and enjoy some good restaurants then this is a good option for a night.

Save for later
