Things to do in Luxembourg in April

There are plenty of activities to enjoy in Luxembourg during April, but if you’re only visiting for a few days, it’s best to base yourself in Luxembourg City. The city offers many things to do, and you’ll find plenty to explore within walking distance.

For museum enthusiasts, Luxembourg City has a great selection that can easily fill your itinerary, but I would certainly recommend getting out of the city to visit Vianden Castle.

Vianden Castle

Vianden Castle, located just under an hour from Luxembourg City, is easily accessible by car. While it’s possible to reach the castle by bus and train, there are no direct routes, so you’ll need to make transfers and it can take a few hours. The most convenient way to visit is by joining a guided tour or renting a car.

As the most popular and most visited castle in Luxembourg, Vianden Castle is also one of the most beautiful. Perched on an outcrop above the town of Vianden, it’s just a short 10-15 minute walk from the town center to the castle.

Construction of the castle began in the 11th century, and it still dominates the town’s skyline. Extensive restoration work has been done, allowing visitors to see how the castle once looked . Be sure to check out the views from the Byzantine Gallery, as the views overlooking the valley are breathtaking.

After touring the castle, you can hike further up the mountain to enjoy even more stunning views of the town, valley, and the castle itself and even get the chairlift back down to the river front.

Enjoy the Éimaischen Festival

Every April in the village of Nospelt and in Luxembourg City you can celebrate this traditional folk festival. You will find crafts markets, concerts, workshops and exhibitions.

Every year people go to buy small bird shaped terracotta whistles which can only be bought here and have different designs each year. If you want to learn more about the local culture then this is something not to miss.

Explore Luxembourg City

The Chemin de la Corniche, part of Luxembourg City’s old city wall, is a stunning spot for a walk, especially on a clear, sunny day. From here, you can enjoy beautiful views down to the river that winds around the historic center of the city.

As you stroll along, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Bock Casemates, the old underground tunnels that once supported the fortifications of the ancient castle. You can explore these tunnels and see where cannons were placed to defend the city during sieges.

Be sure to also venture down into the valley by the river for a peaceful and quiet walk through this charming area.

While you are in the old town, make sure to visit some of the museums to learn more about the history of Luxembourg.

What to wear in Luxembourg in April

If you’re planning to visit Luxembourg in April, it’s best to pack plenty of layers. Earlier in the month can still be a bit cool, but temperatures gradually warm up as April progresses. During the day, a t-shirt or light sweater may be enough, but if it’s windy or cloudy, you’ll want something warmer to wear.

April can also bring occasional rain, so it’s a good idea to wear boots or waterproof shoes when exploring the city, though if you are planning on walking a lot then good shoes are always a must.

If you’re planning on hiking, make sure to bring waterproof hiking boots and at least a waterproof jacket or poncho just in case you get caught out by a surprise downpour.

Where to stay in April in Luxembourg

If you’re planning a visit to Luxembourg in April, for a couple of days or a weekend, it’s best to base yourself in Luxembourg City. The city offers a wide range of accommodations, from boutique hotels to larger chain hotels, especially on the outskirts of the old town, so there’s something for every budget and preference.

If you plan to stay for longer than 3 or 4 days then I would recommend renting a car and exploring the countryside and staying in some of the beautiful towns around the country.

If you plan to rent a car, staying outside the city center might be more convenient, as parking in Luxembourg City can be quite expensive. Most hotels do offer parking but very few in the center offer parking for free.
